Over the past season, Alphonso Davies has made a huge step forward in his career. He became a pivotal figure at Bayern, which is extremely hard. He is recognized as one of the best players in the Bundesliga and even though he had an injury, there is no doubt that Davies will be a central figure for Bayern. Let’s find out more facts about him.

Davis has Canadian citizenship

His parents were from Liberia, from where they fled when a bloody civil war broke out there. Alphonso was born on November 2, 2000, in a Liberian refugee camp in neighboring Ghana. Five years later, the parents managed to gather their spirits – and went to look for happiness in Canada. A whole new life began. However, Davies obtained Canadian citizenship much later – in mid-2017, at the age of 16 and a half years.

The family barely made ends meet

Alphonso went to school, but the family’s money was in short supply. He became interested in football, but could only afford some low-budget career options. Basically, he played in the league under the name Free Footie, which allows guys who are not able to pay for training in regular clubs and going to matches. The talent allowed Davies to advance, he played for the serious children’s teams of his Edmonton and eventually attracted the attention of MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps.

He signed with the Whitecaps on February 23, 2016, when he was 15 years and 3 months old.

No one ever did that younger than him. He made his debut for the second team two months later – also a youth record for Canadian professional football. Finally, on May 15, 2016, he scored his first senior goal, setting another record. That’s when Canada first started looking at this prodigy.

Canada’s national football team is not Canada’s national ice hockey team. You won’t find an abundance of famous names here. Moreover, you won’t find any real international stars at all. Alphonso Davies opens a whole new page in Canadian football. He plays in one of the best clubs in the world and plays in such a way that now his name is heard by everyone. This is the first true Canadian star of the international level.

Alphonso’s popularity quickly spread in Canada

Due to the fact that Canada is not particularly known for football, the emergence of a player like Alphonso Davies immediately had an impact on the country. His popularity even went beyond football and reached the gambling industry, which does not happen very often. Alphonso Davies was always used on the covers of top-rated online bookmakers in Canada and there’s yet somebody who’s managed to take his place.

Alphonso set his record in the Canadian national team too

He made his debut there on June 27, 2017, in a friendly match with Curacao at the age of 16 years and 7 months. This is how he became the youngest player in the history of the national team. He had obtained Canadian citizenship just a couple of days before. He had options to accept Liberian or Ghanaian citizenship. Perhaps with these teams, he would have known more joy of victories.

He was in the Vancouver Whitecaps’ main team on July 16, 2016, but he was no longer the youngest player in MLS history to be ahead of Freddy Adu. Until the end of the season, he managed to play in 8 matches and score the first goals. He spent the following season as a major Whitecaps player.

His performances for the club and the national team attracted the attention of such clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool. He was included in the list of the most promising young players in the world. Bayern won the transfer battle for him in the summer of 2018. On July 25, he signed a contract with her, on the condition that he would play for Vancouver before the end of the year. He joined the new team in January 2019.

What is impressive in Davies?

First of all – crazy high-speed football, which causes instant associations with Gareth Bale. A typical flank player (Alphonso plays a left winger or fullback, as needed), he moves quickly and quickly thinks, making the next move before the opponents have time to understand what can be invented in this situation. He has excellent technique and wonderful dribbling, which allows him to pass opponents easily. He’s not bad at selection, he’s relentless.

Alfonso’s speed is not just very great, but just unique. Last season he became the official record holder of the Bundesliga in this setting. In the match against Werder Bremen, the Canadian footballer set a speed record, accelerating to 36.51 km/h. Since the time when such data began to be recorded (season 2013/14), this is the best indicator in the German championship.

At Bayern, During the second half of the 2018/19 season he played 6 matches in the Bundesliga and managed to score a goal (however, it was in the match against Mainz, won 6-0). But in the previous season, he showed us that a young Canadian is already a player of the main line-up.

He has become one of those players on whom modern Bayern rely on, on whom it will build its future.

He shows incredible results. In addition to the wonderful speed, Davies works well in defense. He’s on the right track because he wants to learn. Now Davies is one of the best in the world in his position. This means that his immediate future in the team is secured. And it would be strange if everything was different with a man who has just been recognized as the best young player in the Bundesliga!
